Honoring Midwife Diane Banigo! (Mar. 13th, 2007)
In honor of Black History Month, the National Community Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (CCOE) at NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center announced last month that Diane Banigo was recognized for her Spirit of Excellency in Midwifery. She was joined by many others at a recognition dinner on March 10, 2007 to celebrate the fact that she is one of only four African-American midwives in the entire state of Minnesota. All of them were honored at the event last weekend.
As you may know, the legacy of the Black Granny Midwife is part of American history that many are unfamiliar with, but is woven into the historical fabric of the profession of midwifery. The legacy of their work has gone unnoticed for far too long and we are excited about educating the community about their importance.
On behalf of West Side Community Health Services, we are all proud of Diane’s successes and are so grateful for her innumerable contributions to our work.
